| With an area of 96 square kilometers, Ithaki is the
fifth largest of teh Ionian islands. It lies south of
Lefkada, east of Kefalonia, form which it is separated by a
channel of 3-4 km wide, and west of the Ehinades islands.
It is a mountainous island, whose highest peak is Mt. Niritos
at 800 m. Its coast is rocky and lined with sand and pebble
beaches washed by blue green water.
The island's economy is based on fishing, its choice quality olive
oil and wine, and tourism. Many Ithacans are still sailors
or emigrants living abroad.
Ithaki, a universal symbol for nostalgia and love for one's
place of birth, is a small paradise on earth. In former
times, many "lords" and "archaeologists"
visited it. In recent years, other travellers have
discovered its beauties and prefer it to the larver mroe
frequented Ionian islands.
Ithaki can be reached from Kefalonia's eastern ports on the
eastern side of Kefalonia (Sami-Pisso Aetos and Agia Efmia-Vathi).
You can get around the island on the local bus, in taxis, or
rented vehicles. Tourist agencies organise excursions by bus
or caique to the island's villages and beaches. |
